Our Expert Guest Speaker Was –
Prof Peter Rea – ENT Surgeon
MA BM BCh (Oxon) FRCS (England) FRCS (ORL-HNS)
Presenting “Thinking Outside The Box: Contributors to your dizziness from beyond your ear.”
Followed by Prof Rea Answering over 30 members questions on their balance conditions
Professor Rea is President of The Royal Society of Medicine section of Otology for 2023-2024, and is past-President of the British Society of Otology (2020-2022), Honorary Professor of Balance Medicine at De Montfort University, Honorary Professor to the Departments of Neuroscience and Informatics at the University of Leicester, and was Chairman of the British Society of Neuro-otology from 2013-2019.
In our opinion Prof Rea is one the leading experts for balance conditions in the world
His specialist practice for both ear surgery and dizziness draws patients from all over the UK and around the world. He has a state of the art balance investigation suite at The London Road Clinic, along with a dedicated and experienced team. He is involved in cutting edge research projects which have led to new treatments for patients with ear and balance disorders. He had a busy surgical practice, but still manages to treat the great majority of his patients without the need for an operation.
He began his medical training at the University of Cambridge, graduating with first-class honours before moving to the University of Oxford to complete his early medical qualifications. He obtained the coveted Gold Medal of The Royal Society of Medicine on completing his specialist training.
His specialist training in ENT surgery was spent in the major London teaching hospitals, including the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital, The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. He has also undertaken prestigious “fellowship” training in Australia and the USA, and is now able to offer over 30 years of medical experience having qualified in 1991.

Introduction Where we clarified some guiding principles of the group and our meetings. We are not doctors – We are not medically trained or qualified, so we will never seek to advise on treatments or medical matters. Whatever advice or personal experiences are shared, everyone should always consult with their own medical and healthcare experts for the best medical care and advice. We are not a charity – We are not a registered charity, we handle no money, we have no money. We are just people helping people. Positive Only – We are a support group, with the emphasis being upon support, so we encourage everyone to seek the positive in what we discuss, in our members situations and our overall attitude to our mutual challenges. Let us always try to find solutions rather than be dragged down by the problems, and let us always give encouragement and hope to each other. Tolerance & Friendship – The group is for everyone, and we can all seek different things from belonging to this group, but at the very least I hope we will all find some degree of friendship and comfort from meeting and knowing our fellow members. Let us all be tolerant of differences and respect that balance disorders come in many flavours and affect any person in any walk of life and at any age – so we of all groups, should acknowledge and celebrate the variety and differences in our members. Charity Support – The group is supported by the Menieres Society and VeDA as an official support group listed by both of their web sites. We support both charities in their good work for all things related to balance issues. NHS Support – We actively support the wonderful UK NHS system (even though it is the most broken that we ever seen) and we encourage participation by all NHS trusts with our group. –Private medical care – Whilst we wish it was possible for all people with balance conditions to be treated in a timely and effective manner at no charge to the patient, the reality in many countries is that this is not possible. We therefore advocate the use of private high quality consultation and treatment, where affordable and as a necessary alternative to “no treatment”. Together we are stronger.
